Plan Your Research Visit

The New York State Library’s Regent Joseph E. Bowman Jr Research Library is one of the oldest and largest libraries of its kind, with over 20 million items to serve the government and people of New York. It’s located in the City of Albany at the south end of the Empire State Plaza, across Madison Avenue from the plaza and the New York State Capital. Our 7th floor space offers scenic mountain views and overlooks several historic Albany neighborhoods.

Research consultations and copies of library materials are available remotely. Our librarians can help you determine the best path to access the resources you need to support your research.

What to Expect

If you’re planning a visit to the library, it’s helpful to prepare in advance in order to make the best use of your time. Review the library’s policies to learn how we protect New York’s historic collections and ensure access for all patrons. To get started:

  • Review the Research Library's Policies to help protect New York's historic collections and respect all researchers and visitors.
  • The Library is located at the center of New York State government, Albany events, and celebrations. Plan ahead with directions and parking information!
  •  To provide the best service, all visitors will be asked to sign in upon entering the 7th and 11th floors.
