Zephaniah Platt (1735-1807), the son of Zephaniah Platt (1705-1778), was born in Huntington, New York. He married Mary Hannah Davis and Mary Van Wyck and fathered 14 children, the first five of whom were born in Huntington: Hannah (1758-?), Elizabeth (1765-1787), Mary (1767-?), Mary (1780-1812), Zephaniah Jr. (1756-1830), Theodorus (1763-1806), Jonas (1769-1834), William Pitt (1771-1835), Charles Z. (1773-1820), Nathaniel Z. (1775-1820), Robert (1778-1858), Levi (1782-?), David (1784-1805), and James (1788-1870).
Eventually Platt moved his family to Poughkeepsie, Dutchess County, New York, and served as a lawyer, a judge, a member of the New York Provincial Congress, a delegate to the constitutional convention, and a New York State Senator. The New York State Legislature, in 1781, in an attempt to encourage the raising of troops, offered bounties of unappropriated lands to officers and soldiers. In 1784 Zephaniah Platt and 32 others were granted a patent for land west of Lake Champlain in what in now Clinton County. Platt, with Nathaniel Platt and Simon R. Reeves also acquired a second patent in that vicinity. Zephaniah's brother Charles was the first actual settler in what was to become Plattsburgh, in 1785, with Zephaniah Platt arriving in 1795, as well as their brothers Nathaniel and Daniel. Zephaniah Platt is buried in Riverside Cemetery.
The Zephaniah Platt papers (1745-1846) are organized into four series: Family Correspondence, Correspondence, Financial and Legal Papers, and Land Papers.
Family Correspondence is primarily letters addressed to Zephaniah Platt from his children, one from his brother Charles, and letters from prospective sons-in-law and their fathers, John and William Smith and Abraham Brinkeroff Junior and Senior.
Correspondence is concerned, for the most part, with land matters involving Zephaniah Platt in Dutchess and Clinton counties. The letters are to and by others as well as Zephaniah Platt, and include family members and business partners such as the members of the Bailey family, Egbert Benson, R. Cochran, Simeon DeWitt, David Gelston, George Izard, Brockholst Livingston, Gilbert Livingston, Burnet Miller, Simon R. Reeves, Ananias Rogers, Peter Sailly, Melancton Smith, John Tayler, Reuben Hyde Walworth, Hugh White, General James Wilkinson, and Woolsey family members. There are some letters to Reverend Frederick Halsey (1761-1838), the son of Cornelius Halsey (1721-1782), who was born in Southampton, New York, and attended Clinton Academy, East Hampton, New York, and Columbia University, New York City. In 1794 or 1796 Halsey moved to Plattsburgh, New York, and organized the First Presbyterian Church where he preached for 43 years. Reverend Halsey married two cousins, Letitia Platt and Maria (Platt) Mann, the daughters of Zephaniah Platt's brothers, Nathaniel and Charles, as well as Hannah Rogers.
Financial and Legal Papers include an account memorandum book of Zephaniah Platt's for 1785; business agreements; a military certificate, and inspection returns for Clinton County; receipts; and the estate papers and wills for Gerald W. Beekman (1786), Gisbert Pele [Pelze?] (1755, 1790), and John Platt (1771).
Land papers consist of abstracts, agreements, deeds and maps for lands in the Nine Partners Patent, Dutchess County, New York, and various patents in Clinton County, New York, as well as maps for Gadaqueda Patent, Oneida County, New York, and Somerset, Windham County, New York. Several documents pertain to the founding of Plattsburgh, Clinton County, New York, with a list of the original proprietors. There are a total of seven maps, two of unidentified locations.
