William Cockburn (16 July 1736-17 April 1810) from Berwickshire, Scotland, settled in Kingston, Ulster County, in the early 1760s and was employed as a surveyor, land agent and speculator, primarily in Ulster County, for the Hardenbergh and Hurley Patents, but also for surrounding counties and for his personal land dealings in what is now Vermont.

Cockburn married Catherine Trumpbour (spelled variously Trompbour, Trimpbour and, most commonly, Tremper) of Palatine German descent. They had five children: Alexander, James, Christina (who married Nicholas DeMyer), Catherine (who married John Trumpbour), and William, Jr.

William Cockburn's sons, James (1775-1848) and William, Jr. (1769-1806) accompanied their father on surveying expeditions, as did his nephew, Jacob Trumpbour, Jr.

John Kiersted, Sr. (1786-1862), of Saugerties, was a frequent surveyor for the Cockburns and, in later years, James Cockburn's son, Walter A. Cockburn, also worked as a surveyor.

As evidenced in an advertisement in the collection, William Cockburn also taught surveying, influencing Moses DeWitt of Ulster County, and employing numerous other surveyors such as Charles C. Brodhead (Broadhead) and John Cantine.

William Cockburn is buried in Mount Marion Cemetery, Kingston, New York.

Scope and Content Note:

The Cockburn Family Land Papers are divided into four series: Correspondence, Legal and Financial, Land Papers, and Writings.

The Correspondence Series (Box 1, Folders 1 and 2) consists of a few letters, primarily between family members regarding the family history. The bulk of the correspondence is arranged according to the locale to which it pertains.

The Legal and Financial Series (Box 1, Folders 3-25) consists of accounts and documents where geographic location could not been ascertained. Accounts include bills, paybooks, and calculations from William Cockburn's business matters in the 1760s to Walter A. Cockburn's in 1863. A manuscript advertisement addresses William Cockburn's availability to teach and execute surveying. There are a few law documents regarding cases and the hiring of attorneys by William Cockburn. Lists, accounts, and a memoranda book deal with lands owned or surveyed by the Cockburn family. There are two slave bills of sale executed in Ulster County.

Drafts or excerpts of wills and estate matters found throughout the collection relate to William Cockburn of Kingston, Ulster County (Legal and Financial, 1810); Nicholas Crouselor of Catskill, Greene County (Legal and Financial, 1796); Jacob Persen of Saugerties, Ulster County (Land Papers – Ulster County, Saugerties, 1787); Richard Cole (Land Papers – Ulster County, Hurley, 1844), May Bickley, Acting Attorney General of New York State (Land Papers – Ulster, Hurley Patent, dated 1716, died 1724), and Johannis (Johannes) Hardenbergh (?-1748) to Jacob Hardenbergh and the heirs of Nancy Ryerse or Ryerson (Mrs. Geradus Hardenbergh) of Sullivan County (Land Papers – Ulster, Hardenbergh Patent, 1793-1794).

The Land Papers Series makes up the bulk of the collection and includes correspondence, fieldbooks, indentures, maps, receipts, and surveys. These are arranged by present county and township (according to David H. Burr's Atlas of the State of New York) or Great Lot, and date. Where patents span several counties, See references are given. Patent names and current towns are given when known. Due to the extent and detail of the collection, many but not all personal names are listed in the finding aid, listing being determined by legibility of handwriting. Unidentified land papers and maps are located at the beginning of the series.

There are some counties and towns whose names are now obsolete and which may be problematic. Three such towns are 1) Cookhouse (Owl's Nest in a Native American language) is situated in Sanford, Broome County across the Delaware River from Deposit, Delaware County; 2) Younghouse/Yagh House (meaning a shelter used by Native Americans on hunting trips) is in the vicinity of the present Wurtsboro, Sullivan County, and 3) Westfield is now Rockland, Sullivan County, not to be confused with Old Westfield Township. Albany County originally encompassed several counties, most notably the present Greene County. Fulton was established from a part of Montgomery County.

The spelling of personal names was notoriously inconsistent. For example, the Wolfen Family of Saugerties was originally De Wolfen and De Wolven. Two patents involved in this problem are Henry Seaton (Seton Patent) and John Dies (Dice's Manor).

Ulster County is the county most frequently represented in the collection with the Hardenbergh Patent (two boxes) and the Hurley Patent (one box). Related maps may also be found under Ulster County continued in one-and-a-quarter boxes. The Cockburns were employed for the most part by Johannis (Johannes) Hardenbergh, Gulian Verplanck, the Kingston Corporation, Robert Livingston, as well as by various individual farm owners and renters.

Ulster County was populated during this time by English (from Connecticut), Scots, Palatine Germans, French Huegenots, and Dutch (from Albany and Dutchess counties and New Jersey). Many personalities in the collection were business partners or relations and names not readily identified on folder titles may be found by searching such relationships. Gulian Verplanck was a partner with Robert Livingston in the Hardenbergh Patent and a brother-in-law of Charles MacEvers. Johannis (Johannes) Hardenbergh, after whom the patent was named, was the son-in-law of Jacob Rutsen. Hardenbergh's son-in-law, Charles C. Brodhead (Broadhead), frequently surveyed with the Cockburns. Hardenbergh did not approve of his son Gerardus' (Gross's) wild life style and left his share to Geradus' wife Nancy Ryerse (Ryerson) and their eleven issues can be seen in this collection.

John Jay of Westchester County was married to Sarah Livingston, the daughter of William Livingston (1723-1790). William Livingston's brother was Robert Livingston, the third lord of the manor, who left land in Saratoga County to his daughters: Mrs. Mary (James) Duane (1738-1821), Mrs. Catherine (John) Patterson (1744-1832), and Mrs. Alida Valentine Gardiner (1747-1791). James Duane (1733-1797) was the first mayor of New York City after the Revolution, a state senator, a district judge and a land owner. There is also information on lands given to Joanna, Alida, and Edward in the Hardenbergh Patent; these three individuals may have been the siblings of Robert R. Livingston (1746-1813) of Clermont, a cousin once removed of Robert Livingston, the third lord of the manor. As the eldest son of Robert R. Livingston (1718-1775) of Clermont, he received the largest portion of lands and distributed some to his siblings in his life time. Morgan Lewis, a New York State Attorney General and Chief Justice of the New York Supreme Court, was the brother-in-law of Robert R. Livingston (1746-1813).

The borders of the patents within Ulster, Sullivan and Delaware counties were in conflict from the inception of the Hardenbergh Patent granted by Queen Anne in 1708. Thus, the area can be seen as a chronicle of New York State surveying as surveyors built upon the work of previous surveys in their resolution of disputes.

Augustine Graham was ordered by Lord Cornbury to survey the Hardenbergh Patent in 1706. In 1749 the patent was surveyed by Henry and Ebenezer Wooster of Stamford, Connecticut. Many of the surveyors, including Cadwallader Colden, Surveyor of General of New York State from the Catskills, and John Cantine of Marbleton, came from the Ulster County vicinity and played a part in the county's definition. The collection includes the maps of Simon Metcalfe, who surveyed for the Bradstreet heirs of James Duane versus the Hardenbergh proprietors, Jehu Burr, from Fairfield, Connecticut, John Cox, Jr., Thomas Palmer, George Stimson, John Wilgram, William Hume, Charles Webb, Abraham Vernooy, Christopher and Cornelius Tappan and James Darling. There are copy maps of the work of Augustine Graham, the Woosters, Naning Vischer, and David Baldwin.

Several maps in the collection describe the quality of the land and depict houses and roads, especially those drawn by William Cockburn, who sometimes rendered in near three-dimension.

The Dutchess, Ulster and Delaware Turnpike which ran from Salisbury, Connecticut to Waitles Ferry on the Susquehanna is also represented.

Eight maps are oversized and are listed within the appropriate counties as well as a group at the end of the finding aid. A ninth map, showing Bedford Township (Jay and Van Cortlandt lands) is listed with the oversize maps but has been cataloged as part of the Manuscripts and Special Collections map collection.

The Writings Series contains miscellaneous poetry, prose and essays and is filed in Box 1, Folder 26.
