Biographical Note:

Walter Richard Wheeler III was born in Albany, New York, in 1964 to Walter R. Wheeler, Jr. (1939-2014), a regionally well-known labor activist who worked at the local, state and national levels, and Magdalene T. Gleason Wheeler (1940- ), both natives of Albany.

Raised in southern Rensselaer County, Mr. Wheeler moved to Troy, New York, in the autumn of 1982 to attend Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), and received two degrees from the architectural program there, in 1986 and 1987. He began his professional career with a position at the Office of the State Architect in Albany and later worked with Wagoner & Reynolds Architects. Since 1999 he has served as senior architectural historian at Hartgen Archeological Associates, in Rensselaer, New York.

Mr. Wheeler assembled the trade literature collection during the course of his work as an architectural historian. His engagement with this material was motivated by an interest in the history of printing and illustration, particularly that of architecture, and grew out of a project, “The Architectural Iconography of the Hudson Valley.”

While growing up he attended numerous rallies, strikes, benefits and other political with his father. While at college he became politically active in social justice issues, and, after graduating he belonged to an ad-hoc activist group in Albany, which shared members with the collectives which published the anarchist journal Freezine (1987-1994) and ran the Last Exit Café (1989-1994) (SC20921), both in Troy. (Papers from both Troy groups are housed in the New York State Library; see collections SC10922 and SC20921).

It is through his connection with these groups and their interrelated memberships that the Popular Culture Collection of the Capitol Region collection (QC16527/QC16532) was initiated. The Last Exit Café became the site of meetings and a drop-off point for literature for a wide range of politically engaged groups in the region. Instead of destroying these materials after they had become outdated, an agreement was arrived at with a librarian at the New York State Library, Billy Aul, to create a collection (QC16527/QC16532) at the New York State Library.

Mr. Wheeler has authored numerous articles and monographs on New York State architecture and material culture. He donated his research papers and drafts of a monograph on the work of Philip Hooker to the library in 1992 (SC20924). The balance of his papers are a promised gift to the New York State Library.

Mr. Wheeler has given many additional items to the Library, and several collections to the New York State Museum, including the archeological collections, and created the Wheeler Collection of New York State Silver, donated to the museum in 2019.

Other papers relating to Walter Richard Wheeler III interest and to Walter R. Wheeler, Jr’s labor activities can be found in the Albany Central Federation of Labor (AFL CIO) collection in the M.E. Grenander Department of Special Collections & Archives in the University at Albany library.

Scope and Content Note:

The trade catalogs in this collection were published between 1850 and 2018. Arranged chronologically by Mr. Wheeler, the catalogs’ subjects run the gamut, though some industries are better represented than others with hardware, plumbing, heating, and agricultural equipment firms most prevalent. Most of the catalogs come from businesses which were/are in New York’s Capital region, thus providing a snapshot of commerce in upstate New York.

The nineteenth-century catalogs focus on stoves and other home appliances used for cooking or heating; and tools and machinery used in farming; including seed catalogs.

As the collection moves into the twentieth century, stoves and furnaces are still well represented as are agricultural implements and other hardware/home improvement products; the popularity of wallpaper during this time is evident in this collection. In addition to farming and home improvement, we begin to see a shift toward consumer goods such as clothing and toys, foretelling the rise of the department store as a major shopping destination.

The collection’s mid-twentieth-century offerings again include plentiful examples of hardware catalogs and other catalogs relevant to home improvement. Additionally, department stores such as Gimbel’s and Montgomery Ward are represented here, as are both retail and wholesale jewelers. By the late 1970s, the trends noted above have continued apace, but here we see the addition of some rare-book catalogs.

Once the collection moves into the late-twentieth century and dawning new millennium, we begin to also see some catalogs for specialty shops (tea and handmade pottery, for example). Hardware and home improvement continue to be well represented.

Of particular note are

  • an 1876 four-page pamphlet – with a cut-away illustration showing the parts of a “dry-air refrigerator” manufactured by the Smith Refrigerator Co, 7 James St., Albany;
  • an 1884 illustrated booklet featuring “‘automatic’ school seats, with “no hinge, to possibly break [and] “no sag, no noise”;
  • a 1912 30-page illustrated booklet of Toys That Teach: architectural blocks; ABC blocks; dominoes; checkers; Meccano, which allows children to make “working models of the world’s mechanical wonders” [bridges, Ferris wheels, etc.] out of “plated strips, nuts and bolts”; and Harbutt’s Plasticine, “the perfect modeling material”;
  • 20 wallpaper samples, each measuring 11 in. x 8.5 in., used to entice shoppers to buy Glenfast Wallpapers, sold by Albany Wall Paper & Paints, Inc., ca. 1928 (including a pamphlet and chart to help “the thousands of women about to repaper”) AND “100 new patterns for 1930” of “the first non-fading wall paper originated and introduced by [Montgomery] Ward’s & Co.”
  • Disc Hits. [Sold at] McClure & Dorwaldt, Inc. / Pommer’s. 5 pieces. Order sheets of hit songs “compiled and published by Tunnis “One Spot” Publishers, Oak Park, Ill.” At the bottom of the first page of each two-page list: “Important: Do not forget to indicate if 45 RPM or 78 RPM is wanted.”
