The Lowe family of this collection descends from Peter G. Low, who served as a private in the Ulster County New York militia during the Revolutionary War. Brothers Alfred D. Lowe (1850-?) and Frank D. Lowe (1862-1948) were born in Clayton, Jefferson County, New York. Alfred was the postmaster of Depauville and a storekeeper there, while his brother Frank became the deputy collector and inspector of customs in Clayton, as well as a prohibition inspector. Alfred married Emma Smith in 1873 or 1874, and Frank married Gertrude Plumb in 1882. Alfred and Emma had no children; Frank and Gertrude had one son, Ross Burton Lowe (1883-1968).
Ross B. Lowe graduated from Albany Business College in 1904 and became an insurance agent for Employers' Liability Assurance Corporation, Ltd. In 1912 he married Ayner L. Streets. The couple lived on Franklin Street in Watertown, next door to his parents. The couple did not have any children. Ayner Lowe died in August of 1968 and her husband followed her just over six months later. They are both buried in Clayton Village Cemetery, Clayton, New York.
This small collection contains mainly postcards, both as correspondence and as souvenir items. There are also a few letters, a souvenir coaster and a booklet of bank loan payment stubs. Most of the items relate to the three Lowe families described above. It is not clear how the two items in Folder 2 relate to this collection or to whom the 1939 New York World's Fair souvenir items belonged.
One interesting item is the membership card sent to Mrs. R.B. (Ayner) Lowe in 1962 certifying her membership in the Order of the Eastern Star, Calumet Chapter, No. 274 at Clayton, New York, (See folder 8).
