Acquisition: | Gift of Christine Bergeron Mangano, August 2013 |
Processed By: | Kayleigh Paster, Student Assistant (University at Albany) for Manuscripts and Special Collections, June 2014 |
The genealogical material in this collection was compiled by Christine Bergeron Mangano (1946-2014) of Utica, Oneida County, New York. The research focuses on Mangano's maternal ancestors, the Winne and Bridgeford families; her paternal ancestors, the Bergeron family; and the allied families that intermarried with them.
Pieter Winne, the progenitor of the American branch of the family, emigrated from Holland with his wife and children and settled in Bethlehem, Albany County, New York, in 1684. The family became involved in the Albany, New York, legal and medical communities.
The Bridgeford family came to the Albany, New York, area from England. Richard Bridgeford settled in the Albany area sometime in the mid- to late-1700s. He married Hannah Painter in 1788, and the couple had five children. After Bridgeford's death in 1808 the family left the area, moving to other parts of New York as well as Kentucky and Missouri. At least two of the Bridgeford children returned to Albany by 1820, re-establishing the family in the area.
The Bergeron family came to the United States from Canada sometime during the late 1800s. Originally from the province of Quebec, Leandre and Eulilie Bergeron settled in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. Their son, Ernest Bergeron, was born there in 1891; he eventually moved to Albany, New York. Ancestors of the Bergeron family have been traced as far back as 1581 in Courgeon, France.
Compiled between 1962 and 2013 by Christine Bergeron Mangano, this collection consists of materials related to the genealogy and history of the Winne, Bridgeford, and Bergeron families, as well as the families that intermarried with them. Her research traces many of the ancestors of these families as far back as the Middle Ages, and consists of both original documents and copies as well as Mangano's own notes and correspondence related her research.
Most information in the collection that pertains to individuals born before 1700 is found only on pedigree charts and brief genealogical profiles, but for later family members documentation includes original and copied materials such as letters, photographs, newspaper articles, excerpts from published historical works and genealogies, census data, maps, cemetery plot and interment records, and records for births, marriages, deaths, and military service. Of particular interest is the large number of original nineteenth- and twentieth- century photographs.
The content of this collection was originally stored in loose-leaf binders. The materials have been removed from these binders and placed in folders that reflect their original titles, order, and composition. Any binders not given a title by Mangano were assigned a name during processing. Some of the families in the collection were represented by more than one binder with identical titles. In these cases, numbers have been assigned to the binders to differentiate between them. Items of interest, such as the nineteenth-century photographs and other original documents, have been noted in the listing for each folder as well.
