Formerly the Raj Kapoor Ensemble, the Dance Theater of Nepal has been performing in the United States since 1996. Its performances attempt to provide audiences with an experience of Himalayan culture and the region's ethnic groups, each having its own music and dance traditions that make up Nepali society. Performance venues have included Columbia University, Princeton University, the American Museum of Natural History, the Smithsonian Institution, and the New York State Museum. Performing members come from Nepal, the United States, Tibet, Africa, and India, and include music and dance director Raj Kapoor, and projects director Sherry Onna Handlin.
The records of the Dance Theater of Nepal are the office and performance records of the group, which specializes in Himalayan music and dance. It includes incorporation documents, artists' profiles, publicity and press materials, program notes, support materials, syllabi for classes and workshops, photographs, and video recordings. With the exception of some photographs and video recordings, most materials are photocopies. The arrangement and titling of the folders are the work of Dance Theater of Nepal's projects director Sherry Onna Handlin.
