This series of papers follows the trail of an old Manhattan family. The path begins with the Dyckman and Harsen families, both of whom were of the earliest Dutch settlers of Manhattan. Nicholas Dyckman (1692-1758), to whom the earliest records in this collection pertain, owned an estate of approximately 94 acres located in today's northern Manhattan that was bordered by the Hudson and North rivers. Jacob Harsen (1672-unknown) owned a farm south Dyckman's estate which encompassed much of today's Upper West Side neighborhood of New York City.
In 1749 Rachel Dyckman (ca.1725-1772), the daughter of Nicholas Dyckman and Anneke Sevenhooven (dates unknown), married Johannas Harsen (1714-unknown), who is sometimes referred to by the Anglicized name "John," the son of Jacob Harsen and Cornelia Dyckman (dates unknown). Johannas and Rachel had seven children. Upon the death of her father, Rachel inherited Nicholas Dyckman's 94-acre estate.
In 1773 Jacobus Harsen (1750-1835), the eldest son of Johannas Harsen and Rachel Dyckman Harsen, married Catharine Cozine (1750-1835), whose family had immigrated to Manhattan in 1684. The approximately 122-acre Cozine family estate, the title to which was given by the Duke of York, stretched between the North and East rivers in northern Manhattan that adjoined the Dyckman family estate. Jacobus Harsen, who is sometimes referred to by the Anglicized name "Jacob", was active in New York City's political life, serving as both alderman and city magistrate. Jacobus was also an active member of the Reformed Dutch Church, serving as a ruling elder.
Cornelius Harsen (1783-1838) was the son of Jacobus Harsen and Catharine Cozine. In 1805 Cornelius married the daughter of another old Dutch Manhattan family, Johanna Henrietta Ritter (1788-1843). They had eight children. Cornelius served as the colonel of artillery of the New York State Militia during the War of 1812, and Johanna was known for her charitable works. Upon the death of Johanna's father, John P. Ritter (1747-1813) a large portion of his estate, which bordered the Harsen estate, was willed to his daughter. Both Cornelius and Joanna died of tuberculosis.
Jacob Harsen (1808-1863) was the second child of Cornelius Harsen and Joanna Henrietta Ritter Harsen. Jacob attended Columbia University, class of 1825, and then studied medicine under Dr. Alexander H. Stevens at both the New York Hospital and at the College of Physicians and Surgeons, graduating in 1829. Jacob maintained connections to his alma maters throughout his life, bequeathing land to the College of Physicians and Surgeons, establishing the Harsen Prize for the students at the college, and presiding on the board that oversaw the merger of the college with Columbia University. Jacob practiced medicine briefly, focusing his practice on the poor and underserved of New York City, including acting as the District Physician of the Eighth Ward during the cholera outbreak of 1832. However, Jacob felt he did not have the spirit or commitment to continue in daily practice, and so moved on to lead many medical and charity organizations in New York City up until the time of his death, including the New York Medical Association and the Saint Nicholas Society. After the deaths of his grandfather in 1835 and father in 1838, Jacob Harsen came into full possession of his family's now massive Manhattan estate. Upon his death a quantity of the real estate was auctioned, and the rest was distributed among his siblings, nieces, and nephews, with the largest portion passing to his sister Cornelia Rachel Harsen (1817-1900).
Cornelia Rachel Harsen married Lyman Rhoades (1817-unknown), a son of an old New England family, in 1835. Lyman Rhoades was involved in the New York financial world. His offices in the Equitable Trust Company in New York City were damaged in the Great Fire of 1835. Cornelia and Lyman had two sons. Their eldest was John Harsen Rhoades (1838-1906), who married Annie G. Wheelwright (c.1862-unknown), with whom he had two daughters, Cornelia Harsen Rhoades (1863-ca.1940), a children's book author, and Elizabeth Rhoades (1864-1945). John, a banker, retired at age 39.
Their second child, Lyman Rhoades (1847-1907), also a successful banker, presided on the boards of several financial institutions including the Greenwich Savings Bank and the Equitable Trust Company. Lyman married Elizabeth Nash (1856-1919), with whom he had Lyman Rhoades, Jr. (1881-1960), Katharine Nash Rhoades (1885-1965), and Stephen Nash Rhoades (1893-1926). Katharine was a Dada artist, a member of the Steiglitz Circle, and one of Alfred Steiglitz's Three Graces.
Lyman Rhoades, Jr., followed in the footsteps of his forefathers and was also successful in the New York financial sphere, holding an office on Wall Street in New York City that was directly in front of the September 16, 1920, Wall Street bombing. In 1906 Lyman Rhoades, Jr., married Carol Beardsley Nye (1885-1958); they had five children: Elizabeth Reynolds Rhoades, Lyman Rhoades, John Harsen Rhoades, George Rhoades, and Carol Nye Rhoades (1906-1985). Carol Nye Rhoades married Edward Robinson (1899-1987), and it is through their daughter, Carol Robinson (1929- 2011), that this collection passed to the New York State Libray.
These papers span nine generations of one family from the mid-1700s through the second half of the 20th century. Beginning with the land titles, bonds, and other legal documents of Nicholas Dyckman (1692-1758), Jacob Harsen (1672-unknown), Johannas Harsen (1714-unknown), Rachel Dyckman (ca.1725-1772), Garret Cozine (1750-1835), Jacobus Harsen (1750-1835), and John P. Ritter (1747-1813), one is able to trace the transition of life in Manhattan from Dutch to English, and from royal British colony to independent nation. Throughout this time and through these papers the patient accumulation of the Harsens' massive real estate holdings in northern Manhattan is well documented.
Through the papers of Colonel Cornelius Harsen (1783- 1838), Joanna Henrietta Ritter Harsen (1788- 1843), Jacob Harsen (1808- 1863), Cornelia Rachel Harsen Rhoades (1817-1900), and their Purdy, Prall, and Halsted siblings, one is able to view the transition from independent nation to nation at war again with Great Britain, and later to a nation at war with itself. The papers include a co0nsiderable amount of documentary evidence related to the Civil War through the papers of Jacob Harsen which include receipts and advertisements from the New York Medical Association for the donation of medical supplies for Union troops, letters referencing the war in his personal correspondence, and a letter sent to the Secretary of War on May 18, 1861. The correspondence of Cornelia Rachel Harsen Rhoades includes a May 1863 letter from her son, Lyman, which describes the attack on Fort Sumter and contains a clipping of moss from the USS Passaic. These papers also contain several newspaper clippings relating to the Civil War.
The papers of Jacob Harsen (1808-1863), which are nearly one-quarter of this collection, provide documentary evidence of the urban development of Manhattan through the many municipal development projects that took place on or through his estate including the assessment, purchase, and construction of Central Park; the assessment and construction of Bloomingdale Square, and the grading of several New York City streets, including Broadway. Jacob Harsen's involvement with Columbia University, the College of Physicians and Surgeons, and his service on the board merging the two are well documented in the papers as well. In addition to these manuscripts there are mementos from Jacob Harsen's trips to Europe, Russia, Great Britain, and Algeria.
Evidence of the massive real estate holdings of the Harsen family can be found in the several wills, estate inventories, and other papers related to the land auction that look place following Jacob Harsen's death. There is also documentation of Cornelia Rachel Harsen Rhoades's role in the management of the family's estate.
A glimpse into the history of New York City's financial district can be found in the papers of the three generations of successful bankers in the Rhoades family; the family papers also provide photographic evidence of that family's daily lives. The papers include lithographs showing firefighters battling the blazing 1835 Great Fire of New York City. The papers of Lyman Rhoades (1847-1907) includes correspondence which references the financial climate of the time, as well as an inventory of cash and securities from his estate. Elizabeth Nash Rhoades (1856-1919) is represented by two very rich pieces of correspondence and a small collection of photographs from her family, including those of a wedding in 1912 and of her parents George Hyatt Nash and Mollie Nash. Katharine Nash Rhoades, the Dada artist and Alfred Steiglitz's original New Woman, is represented in several photographs and one piece of correspondence.
The papers of Lyman Rhoades, Jr. (1881-1960), consists of correspondence that spans 57 years and a detailed appraisal of his estate. The childhood years of Lyman Rhoades, Jr. and Carol Beardsley Nye Rhoades (1885-1958) family is documented through 71 negatives of photographs of the family in 1911, 1913, and 1916 as well as a photo album with 50 images.
These papers also include many newspaper and magazine clippings relating to events in United States history, many calling cards, invitations to family weddings, maps, many items of genealogical note, obituaries for many family members, and records of the family's donations to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of the City of New York. In addition, this collection contains a few out-of-place items: a few documents from Jacob Halsted's legal practice on cases not pertaining to the family and papers relating to Frederick and Catharine Eckert, whose connection to the family is uncertain.
In addition to manuscript materials there is a Cuban cigar box turned toy chest that contains a collection of small three dimensional objects. This box is a time capsule of an early-twentieth-century American upper-class childhood. Included in the box are hand-sewn doll costumes in a wide array of textiles from supple leather to muslin to silk, three dolls, and a toy bassinet complete with a small replica hot water bottle.
In addition to this series of papers, the Carol Robinson Estate also included a large number of books; each title will be cataloged separately as part of the holdings of the New York State Library's book collection. The Robinson gift also included several works of art, home furnishings, and other three-dimensional objects that have been accessioned to the holdings of the New York State Museum.
