The Hudson River Steamboat and Navigation Ephemera Collection consists of travel brochures, tourist guidebooks, maps, picture postcards, and a shipping ledger collected by William S. Clark. The collection includes many images of steamboats and sites along the Hudson River and information about transportation, travel and tourism in the Hudson River Valley region of New York State.
The tourist guidebooks of the Hudson River and environs were published at various dates from the late 19th through the early 20th centuries. These guidebooks tend to be profusely illustrated and provide detailed text about the cities, town, historic sites and landscape. Many of the books also contain fold-out maps of sections of the river and its ports. The Historic Map of the Picturesque Hudson from New York to Albany contains a comprehensive illustration of the New York City skyline, circa 1915, with identification of prominent buildings.
The collection also includes tourist brochures, timetables, and other publications issued by operators of passenger steamboats on the Hudson River between New York City and Albany. The Hudson River Day Line, known for the speed and grandeur of its "great white fleet," produced a wide array of colorful publications which are found in this collection. These include several issues of the Hudson River Day Line Magazine. Other steamboat companies represented in the collection are Hudson River Night Line, Peoples Line, Citizens Line, and Catskill Evening Line.
This collection has more than four hundred picture postcards, spanning a period of time from the late 1890s to the 1960s. These include views of passenger steamboats that plied the Hudson River as well as bridges, port facilities, and iconic sites along the Hudson River. There are images of numerous steamboats including the Hendrick Hudson, Robert Fulton, Washington Irving, Alexander Hamilton, Peter Stuyvesant, Mary Powell, and Albany, which were part of the "great white fleet." Views of steamboats operated by other companies are also found in the collection including the DeWitt Clinton, Adirondack, Trojan, Rensselaer, Berkshire, C.W. Morse, and Kaaterskill. These postcards were sold primarily as souvenirs of the journey on the Hudson by steamboat lines. Quite often the messages on back laud the virtues of the scenic journey on the river.
The postcard collection also includes views of the Brooklyn Bridge, Queensboro Bridge, Williamsburg Bridge, Manhattan Bridge, Washington Bridge, Hell Gate Bridge and High Bridge in New York City, and the Bear Mountain Bridge, Mid-Hudson Bridge, and Poughkeepsie Rail Bridge upriver. Scenes on the postcards also depict buildings and structures of historical significance such as the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Battery Park, Grant's Tomb, Washington's Headquarters, and the New York State Capitol. Natural features and landmarks are also depicted on postcards, including the Palisades, Sugar Loaf, Anthony's Nose, Storm King, and Bear Mountain. Lastly, the postcards depict the transportation infrastructure of the early 20th century with scenes of Pennsylvania Station, subway tunnels and "sandhogs" working on the Hudson and Manhattan Railroad Company tunnels, as well as views of port facilities at New York, Newburgh, Poughkeepsie, Catskill, Hudson, and Albany. Transportation infrastructure is also vividly depicted in twenty-five "Real Photo" postcards, which capture scenes of canal workers and the work boats and machinery they used.
Notably, this collection includes postcards and a folder issued as souvenirs commemorating the Hudson-Fulton Celebration from September 23 to October 9, 1909. The postcards include portraits of Henry Hudson and Robert Fulton along with colorful illustrations their ships, the Half Moon and Clermont, respectively. In addition there are postcards issued at the time that depict other historical events relative to the history of New York State, such as the Dutch purchasing Manhattan Island from the Indians and the storming of Stony Point during the American Revolution. Some of these cards feature the art work of Bernhardt Wall, who was one of the best known postcard artists of the time. The collection also includes a rare souvenir folder that was artistically designed and features portraits of Henry Hudson and Robert Fulton along with colorful illustrations of the Half Moon and Clermont, as well as contemporary views of West Point and New York City. On the reverse side of the folder is a program of the events and festivities of the Hudson-Fulton celebration.
Also included in the collection is a day book of shipping accounts from 1851, which provides a record the cargo carried on board the steamboats Isaac Newton, Hendrick Hudson, Oregon, and New Jersey. The destinations of the freight highlight the role of the Hudson River in the transportation of goods to the Erie Canal and major ports on the Great Lakes.
