Scope and Content Note:

This collection consists chiefly of official records of army regiments and individual soldiers of New York State who participated in the Civil War from 1861 to 1865. Regimental records consist chiefly of muster rolls which provide alphabetical rosters of officers and enlisted men of companies; other regimental records include ordnance store reports, requisition forms, payroll receipts, and printed orders. Individual service records consist chiefly of volunteer enlistment certificates and discharge certificates issued to soldiers when they mustered in and mustered out. These records include a considerable amount of information about individual soldiers, such as their place of birth, age, height, skin complexion, and color of eyes and hair, as well as occupation at time of enlistment. Soldiers of many different regiments are represented in these records, but it appears that most served in the 2nd New York Mounted Rifles and 10th New York Cavalry regiments.

The collection also includes records related to applications submitted by veterans and/or their families after the war for additional bounty or pensions as provided by an act of Congress dated July 26, 1866. A number of these records are found in a bound volume that provides a brief summary of the proceedings. The names of the soldiers detailed in the book are listed in the inventory below.  Also, there is a series of applications that were handled by Winslow C. Watson, Jr., who served as attorney for a number of clients who resided primarily in Essex and Clinton counties of New York State.

The collection also includes some records of soldiers who served in the regular United States Army units and volunteer organizations from other states; a few miscellaneous records related to wars and conflicts other than the Civil War.
