Biographical Note:

Amos Wheeler was a seaman from Stonington (New London County), Connecticut. Published genealogical records indicate he was born June 27, 1784, was the oldest of 12 children of Amos Wheeler (1759-1843) and Lucy Holmes Wheeler (1765-1837); married Ann Charles; and died June 9, 1832.

Scope and Content Note:

The papers are related to the seafaring activities of Amos Wheeler, Jr., especially when he was on the crew of private mercantile ships commissioned by the U.S. Navy for military duty during the War of 1812. The papers include letters, diaries, and financial and legal papers concerning Wheeler's capture by British authorities and subsequent imprisonment at Halifax, Nova Scotia, from about mid-August to mid-October 1812; serving as an officer aboard the schooner Saratoga from November 1812 to March 1813, during which time he was wounded on February 9, 1813 when the vessel came under attack. Also included are account memorandum books, logbooks, inventories, contracts, accounts, and receipts related to bounties and prize money awarded for capture of the British ship Trevor by the American ship True Blooded Yankee on October 2, 1814; affidavits and other legal documents concerned with the indictment of Giles Slocum II for financial losses incurred when cargo ships he chartered were seized by the British; and sundry papers related to operations of the cargo ships Saratoga, Yankee, George, Nabby, and Young Hornet.
