C. Howard Nash was born June 12, 1877, the son of Charles and Emma Nash. He resided in Troy, New York, most of his life, apparently working in family business interests. Later in life, Nash became an avid hiker and mountaineer. He was an active member of the Taconic Hiking Club and for a period he served as director of the club. He was also one of the founding members of the Troy Forty-Sixers, a hiking club known today as the Adirondack Forty-Sixers. Within a period of about four months, April 10 to August 28, 1937, he climbed all forty-six peaks in the Adirondack Mountains that were 4,000 feet above sea level or higher; it was a record for his time. He died in Bennington, Vermont, December 20, 1960.

Scope and Content Note:

The C. Howard Nash papers consist of photographic journals compiled by Nash as a record of his hiking and mountaineering adventures in various mountain ranges in New York State and New England. In particular, the journals record trips to the Adirondack and Catskill Mountains in New York, the Berkshires Mountain in Massachusetts, the Green Mountains in Vermont, the White Mountains in New Hampshire, and the Taconic Mountains, which cover parts of New York, Massachusetts, and Vermont. The journals contain short descriptions of trips, pamphlets, postcards and photographs taken by Nash. The photographs include images of the natural environment, campsites, and hike participants. These are often accompanied by detailed descriptions of trail and weather conditions and the names of accompanying hikers. Also included with the journals are newspaper clippings, brochures, and mementos. Most trips were made with family and friends, including his sister, Margery Ludlow, Franklin H. Wilson Jr., Thomas F. Malone, and Edward O. and Grace Hudowalski. Occasionally, the trips would be organized group outings of the Taconic Hiking Club or the Forty-Sixers.

The practice of keeping a written narrative of the walks and climbs was apparently discontinued by Nash in June 1938. Thereafter, brief notes were written on scrap paper and, occasionally, typewritten descriptions by Franklin H. Wilson Jr. accompany the photographs. The last folder of the collection includes several typewritten descriptions of walks, most likely compiled by Wilson, that are not accompanied by photographs.

Several images in this collection are available on-line in NYSED OCE Digital Collection Gallery: http://digitalcollections.archives.nysed.gov/index.php/Browse/modifyCriteria/facet/collection_facet/id/78/mod_id/0
