Historical Note:

The Albany County Branch of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union (W.C.T.U.) was organized in 1874. It accepted into its membership any woman who pledged to abstain totally from the consumption of intoxicating beverages and work for the passage of legislation to prohibit the manufacture and sale of intoxicating beverages. They were also involved in other political and social causes, including the women's suffrage movement and greatly restricting child labor.

Scope and Content Note:

These records document the activities and functions of the Albany County Branch of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union (W.C.T.U.) from 1886 to 1955. The records include the recording secretary's books, dated 1896-1955, which contain the minutes of meetings; the treasurer's books, dated 1909-1954, which contain a record of dues receipts and expenditures for supplies and promotional activities; printed programs; a scrapbook; and assorted notes on the history of the organization. Some of the records relate to branches that met in Watervliet and Cohoes.
