Historical Note

The Albany Zouave Cadets, organized in 1860, became Company A of the 10th New York Militia Regiment of Infantry. During the Civil War, it was incorporated into the 177th New York Volunteers for a service of nine months. It was engaged principally in the Siege of Port Hudson, Louisiana. After the war members of the unit formed a veterans organization that held summer encampments and other events that featured military like pageantry.

Scope and Contents Note

The collection consists of records and ephemera of the Albany Zouave Cadets. It includes printed copies of the constitution and by-laws, original manuscript of minutes, letter books, correspondence, and other papers related to organizational and business matters. Also includes scrapbooks containing news clippings about meetings, social activities, obituaries of members, programs, photographs, badges, the unit flag, and annotated copies of Albany Zouave Cadets: Fifty Years Young by James H. Manning (Albany: Weed-Parsons Printing Co., 1910).
