The Doane name was prominent in the nineteenth century in New England and New York, particularly in religious circles, having descended from an early Pilgrim family of the same name. Both George Washington Doane (1799-1859) and his second son, William Croswell Doane (1832-1913), served as Episcopal bishops, while his eldest son, George Hobart Doane (1830-1905), became a monsignor in the Roman Catholic Church in New Jersey. George W. Doane's father, Jonathan Doane (1755/6-1818), was a Philadelphia architect who designed and built the New Jersey state house in Trenton, N.J., in 1792.
George Washington Doane
George Washington Doane was born in Trenton, New Jersey, on May 27, 1799, son of Jonathan Doane (1755-1818) and Mary Higgins Doane (ca. 1774-1858). He grew up in Geneva, New York, and graduated from Union College in 1818. He then studied theology at the General Theological Seminary of the Episcopal Church in Manhattan and was ordained by Bishop John H. Hobart in 1821 as deacon and in 1823 as priest.
From 1824 to 1828 Doane was a professor at Washington College (now Trinity) in Hartford, Connecticut, and during the same period was assistant to Rev. William Croswell in editing the Episcopal Watchman. From 1828 to 1830 he was assistant to Rev. Dr. John S.J. Gardiner, rector of Trinity Church, Boston, and became rector of the parish in 1830, serving until 1832, when he was elected the second bishop of the diocese of New Jersey; he was consecrated in St. Paul's Chapel, New York, on October 31 of that year.
Bishop Doane founded St. Mary's Hall in Burlington, New Jersey, the first institution of its kind in America, "to educate the Church's girls in the Church's way," and a school for boys, which became Burlington College. He was rector of St. Mary's Church at Burlington from the time he assumed the office of bishop until the time of his death, and was president of Burlington College from 1846 until 1859. He helped frame the first constitution of the Domestic and Foreign Missionary Society of the church, and was the first American bishop to preach in the Established Church to an English congregation at the consecration of the parish church at Leeds in 1841. Bishop Doane published numerous addresses and a volume of poems entitled Songs by the Way (New York, 1824).
George W. Doane married Eliza Green (Callahan) Perkins in Boston in 1829. She was the widow of James Perkins and mother to Sarah Paine Perkins (Cleveland) (1819-1893); Charles Callahan Perkins (1823-1886); James Henry Perkins (1825-ca.1850) and Edward Newton Paine Perkins (ca. 1827-1899). George W. and Eliza Perkins Doane had two sons: George Hobart Doane and William Croswell Doane. George W. Doane died on April 27, 1859, and is buried in Burlington, New Jersey.
William Croswell Doane
William Croswell Doane was born in Boston, Massachusetts, March 2, 1832, where his father, then Rev. George W. Doane (1799-1859), was rector of the prominent Trinity Church in the city. His mother was Eliza Green Callahan Perkins (1789-1859), a widow with four children. He was named for his father's best friend, the Rev. William Croswell. Within a year of his birth, his father was elected the second bishop of New Jersey. The family settled in , in a home they called "Riverside." Doane attended the private Episcopal St. Mary's School there, founded in 1837 by his father. In 1847 Bishop George Doane founded Burlington College, where William C. Doane studied theology and from which he graduated, circa 1850. He was ordained a deacon on March 6, 1853, and a priest in 1856. Like his father, he became involved in the "Oxford Movement," which sought to restore richness of practice to the liturgy. From 1856 to1860, Rev. Doane had charge of St. Barnabas Free Church in Burlington. After his father's death in 1859, he became rector of St Mary's Church in his father's place.
On November 24, 1853, he married Sarah Katherine Condit (1833-1907), daughter of Joel W. Condit (1795-1860) and Margaret Harrison Condit (1800-1865) of Newark, New Jersey. They had two daughters, Eliza Greene Doane, called Lizzie (1854-1912), and Margaret Harrison Doane (1858-1883). Margaret, who was known as Daisy, died unmarried at the age of 25.
In 1863, William C. Doane was called to St. John's Church in Hartford, Connecticut, where he served throughout the Civil War. It was there that he became a lifelong friend of the Rev. Henry W. Nelson. In 1867 Doane was called to Albany, New York, to serve as rector of Saint Peter's Protestant Episcopal Church, which had been established in 1708. The General Convention of 1868, in New York City, founded a new diocese of Albany, and Doane was elected the first bishop. His election was strongly opposed by some because he was so young and, also, because the evangelical element looked upon Rev. Doane as a high churchman, with his ritualistic practices adopted as part of the "Oxford Movement" influence. He was consecrated as a bishop in his own parish church, St. Peter's, on February 2, 1869.
In addition to serving the Albany diocese for over forty years, William C. Doane established a number of benevolent institutions in the diocese. Among these are St. Agnes School, founded in 1870 for the education of girls; the Child's Hospital, an institution free to all sick and crippled children; and St. Margaret's House, a nursery for babies, founded in 1884, in connection with the Child's Hospital. The Diocesan Sisterhood was established by Bishop Doane in 1873, and for many years he was acting president of the Foreign and Home Missionary societies of the Episcopal Church.
All Saints Cathedral in Albany, New York, is the crowning glory of Bishop Doane's work as a founder; it was erected in 1884-1888 at a cost of more than a half million dollars. His close relationship with J. Pierpont Morgan resulted in considerable financial support from Mr. Morgan for this venture.
In addition to his work within the diocese, Doane was a member of the New York State Board of Regents from 1892 to 1904, serving as vice-chancellor and chancellor. Beginning in 1892 he had charge of the American churches on the continent of Europe for many years, and he was a leading member of the committee appointed by the general convention 1892 to prepare the standard prayer book and hymnal for the use of the church. Among his published works (not all included in this collection) are the Life and Writings of Bishop George Washington Doane (D. Appleton & Co., 1860-61); Mosaics, or the Harmony of Collect, Epistle and Gospel (E.P. Dutton & Co., 1892); Addresses to the Graduating Classes of St. Agnes School (Thomas Whittaker, 1891); Rhymes from Time to Time (Albany: Riggs Printing and Publishing Co., 1901); and Sunshine and Play-Time (New York: E.P. Dutton & Co., 1893), a volume of verse for children. During the latter years of his life Bishop Doane labored actively in promoting church unity both in his pulpit and privately, and was active in the efforts being made to procure uniform divorce laws in the different states.
Like his father, William C. Doane was a prolific writer of verse, both of a personal and an ecclesiastical nature. His hymn beginning "Ancient of Days," composed for the Albany bicentennial celebration, is printed in the Episcopal hymnal and is in general use in other churches.
During his tenure as bishop of Albany, William C. Doane traveled extensively on church matters both in America and abroad, and attended several of the Anglican Communion's decennial Lambeth conferences held in England. The Anglican Communion is an international association of autonomous national and regional churches and not a governing body; thus, Lambeth conferences serve a collaborative and consultative function, expressing "the mind of the communion" on issues of the day.
Doane died on May 17, 1913, at the age of 81, in New York City. He is buried in a vault beneath the altar of the cathedral he built in Albany, New York.
Eliza Greene Doane Gardiner
William C. Doane's daughter Eliza married James Terry Gardiner in 1881. Gardiner was, at the time, a noted surveyor and engineer who had worked out west in the 1870s with the Fortieth Parallel Survey and the Hayden Survey. The couple had five children: Mary Spring (Frazier) (1882-1920), Margaret Doane (Fayerweather) (1883-1958), Doane (1885-1933), Anne Terry (Pier) (1887-1982), and Elizabeth Greene Gardiner (1890-1987). See The James Terry Gardiner Papers (SC11835a) for more information on this family.

This collection consists of correspondence, journals, writings, scrapbooks, newspaper clippings, and some photographs and ephemeral material created or collected by both Bishop George W. Doane and Bishop William C. Doane. Much of the material relates to their service as Episcopal ministers, but also includes material of a more personal nature such as family letters and poetry.
A small portion of these papers relate to George Washington Doane (Boxes 13 and 14) and span the years 1805 to 1859. The papers include nearly 200 letters to and from his good friend and colleague, Rev. William Croswell, from 1827-1851, as well as letters to his sons and other family members. Of special interest are the letters Doane wrote home from his 1841 trip to England, describing his experiences and travels in Liverpool, London, Oxford and Leeds (Box 13, Folder 11-12). The collection also contains sermons and writings, and several bound volumes, as well as volume one of the published memoirs William C. Doane wrote about his father's life and writings (Box 17).
The larger part of the collection is the papers of William Croswell Doane and his family. There is biographical information, including a manuscript autobiography; some papers from his early career; letters and accounts of his travels; extensive material relating to his services as bishop of the Albany diocese; writings in church publications; handwritten and published sermons; and tributes to him following his death in 1913. Considerable material is devoted to church matters, such as Bishop Doane's writings on the subject of marriage and divorce, and the "Open Pulpit" controversy. In 1868 the creation of the Diocese of Albany and the elevation of then Rev. Doane to bishop created considerable controversy in St. Peter's Parish which had to be resolved by the bishop of New York, Horatio Potter. Letters and reports on this topic, dubbed "St. Peter's Row," can be found in Box 2.
Detailed information is included on the founding and building of All Saints Cathedral in Albany, New York, from its beginnings in 1872 until its final completion in 1904 (Box 3, Folders 5-8). The other institutions Bishop Doane founded are also represented here: St. Agnes School, The Child's Hospital, St. Margaret's House for Infants, and St. Mary's-by-the-Sea in Northwest Harbor, Maine.
Correspondence in this collection is of both a personal and professional nature. Doane received a large number of letters following the death of his father in 1859 and again in 1868 on his election to the post of bishop. He also had considerable correspondence with members of the John V.L. Pruyn family, who were prominent in Albany society and great supporters of the bishop. There are over 100 letters from Bishop John Williams (1817-1899), who was the fourth bishop of Connecticut with whom Bishop Doane appears to have been especially close.
There are not many letters from Doane to family members except for the ones sent from abroad during his travels. Especially interesting are the letters home and royal invitations from the trip to Europe Bishop Doane and his wife took in 1893, including Doane's detailed account of the trip to Athens, Greece, during that time (Box 1, Folder 9-12). Bishop Doane attended the fourth and fifth Lambeth conferences, London, England, in 1897 and 1908, respectively. The collection includes many of his writings and addresses on topics covered in the conferences as well as proceedings and resolutions produced there (Box 1, Folder 13-14). During the 1897 trip, Bishop Doane was present for the Jubilee Celebration of Queen Victoria and was presented to the queen (Box 12, Folder 18). When in London during these trips, Bishop Doane often stayed at 13 Princes Gate, the London home of his good friend J. Pierpont Morgan.
In addition to his considerable writings on religious matters, William C. Doane wrote copious amounts of poetry and verse. These were often addressed to friends and colleagues, but mainly to his wife, daughters and grandchildren. He wrote each of them a verse every year on their birthdays, to his wife on their anniversary, Christmas poems and more. He even wrote poems to J. Pierpont Morgan, who was one of his benefactors through the years (Box 12, Folder 17). Many of these verses have transcriptions included.
The collection also contains some items of Perkins family members, who are Doane's half siblings by his mother. He appears to have been especially close to Sarah Perkins Cleveland and her daughter, Lily. Doane's wife, Sarah K. Condit Doane, who was called Kate, is also represented here through some of her letters and particularly through the manuscript book she compiled of William C. Doane's poems and writings.
These papers were brought together as a collection through a series of donations by Doane's granddaughter, Margaret Doane Gardiner (Mrs. Charles S.) Fayerweather (1883-1958), beginning about 1938. The original group of papers was accessioned May 14, 1947, as collection number GL11835. The collection includes four subsequent donations from Mrs. Charles S. Fayerweather during the 1950s. The original donation and subsequent donations were collated in May 1990. In 2015, the collection was separated into two parts, the Doane Family Papers (SC11835) and the James Terry Gardiner Papers (SC11835a).
A selected number of documents related to the episcopacy of George Washington Doane (1799-1859), who served as bishop of New Jersey from 1832 to 1850, were transferred to the archives of the Episcopal Diocese of New Jersey in August 2011. An inventory of these items and deed of transmittal are available in the accession file.
Other related material may be found in the Cleveland-Perkins Family Papers, 1830-1915, held at the New York Public Library, also donated by Mrs. Charles Fayerweather.
