Genealogy and Family History Note

Genealogical and biographical information on the Truax and allied Veeder families relative to these papers was compiled from various sources of which copies are available in Folder 0 of Box 1. It appears these papers were generated through the ancestry of Dr. Andrew Truax (1811-1883) and Harmon Veeder (1797-1850). Their ancestors were among the earliest settlers in present-day Schenectady, Schenectady County, New York, and the adjoining town of Rotterdam. The families were joined by the marriage of Harmon Veeder to Eleanor Truax (1808-1904), the sister of Dr. Andrew Truax. Eleanor and Andrew, along with Anna Maria and Catherine, were the children of Abraham Truax (1779-1862) and Marion Swart Truax. They were descendants of Philip Truax, an administrator in New Amsterdam, and of Isaac Truax (ca.1642-?), who settled in the present town of Rotterdam on a flat near the south side of the Mohawk River. Abraham Truax (16??-1770) was the father of Andries Truax. Harmon Veeder was a direct descendant of Simon Volkerta Veeder (1624-?), who settled in present-day Schenectady in 1622, and of John M. Veeder (1734-1793), of the Woestine section of Rotterdam, who married Magdalana Vrooman (1734-1813). Their children included Peter Vrooman Veeder, who married Janet Van Eps. Their children included Harmon, Myndert, and Susanna. Susanna may have married John Van Santvoord.

Scope and Content Note

The papers of the Truax and allied families consist chiefly of land titles and related legal and commercial interests. Land titles include deeds, leases, and mortgages related to lots located mostly within the bounds of present-day Schenectady, Schenectady County, New York, and the adjoining town of Rotterdam. Additional family landholdings were located in Herkimer, Montgomery, Otsego, and Saratoga counties in New York State and various places in the state of Michigan. Legal papers include wills; estate inventories; probate certificates that concern bequests and inheritance; summonses; executions; depositions; affidavits; and powers of attorney that were mostly related to Abraham A. Truax's position as the Schenectady County justice of the peace, ca.1815-1822. Financial papers include invoices, bills, receipts, and orders and promissory notes that contain information of specific items bought or sold and the cost of those items. Also included is a ledger (1789-1798) of Peter Veeder and a memoranda book (1822-1825) of Abraham A. Truax. The papers also contain business and personal letters, bills of sale of slaves, and documents related to property damage in Schenectady, ca.1850-1858, that resulted from the Erie Canal enlargement projects.
