John N. Bleecker was born in August 1739, the son of Nicholas Bleecker Jr., an Albany businessman, and Margarita Roseboom Bleecker. The family's business interests and extensive landholdings eventually passed to him.
Bleecker served in the military during the Revolutionary War, where he was involved in the removal of cannon and supplies from Fort Ticonderoga. He later became assistant deputy commissary general of stores and provisions in the New York Department during the war. After the war, he was actively involved in Albany city and county government serving as city and county treasurer, clerk of the board of supervisors and member of the Committee of Correspondence.
Bleecker married Margarita Van Deusen, about 1775; they had eight children who were christened at the Albany Dutch Church. The Bleecker family home was situated on Pearl Street in Albany. Margarita Bleecker passed away in 1794, but he continued to maintain the residence on Pearl Street, raising his family with assistance from relatives and slaves. John N. Bleecker died in 1825.
These papers document the varied activities of John N. Bleecker as a public official and as a private citizen and head of a family. Covering the years 1700 to 1870, these papers include letters, wills, invoices, receipts, patents and deeds. Here are found names of prominent individuals in the history of Albany, such as Roseboom, Brodhead, Romeyn and Van Schaick.
There are also many items related to the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. During the War for Independence Bleecker served in various capacities: as member of Committee of Correspondence, captain of the sixth company of militia in the city of Albany, assistant deputy of stores and provisions in the New York Department. His papers contain documents signed by Peter Van B. Livingston as president of the New York Provincial Congress concerning army stores, also muster rolls, instructions, appointments and contracts. During the War of 1812 Nicholas Bleecker was stationed on Staten Island, whence a number of letters passed between him and his father.
These papers include numerous items related to Bleecker's estate and extensive landholdings in New York State. An inventory of his estate, Albany, July 22, 1812, shows that it consisted of land in Albany, Charlestown, Montgomery County, Saratoga Patent, Ulysses, Homer, Massena, Stillwater, besides bank shares and rentals. Other legal documents of interest include seven bills of sale for slaves sold to John N. Bleecker, 1783-1807.
Another item of interest is a volume of accounts of the Dutch Church Academy in Albany, 1786-1792. The Reverend Bassett is designated superintendent for the year ending June 16, 1789, at a yearly compensation of £100 and as president 1787 to 1789. John N. Bleecker paid for one Latin and one English scholar, as did also Stephen Van Rensselaer. Philip Schuyler, Henry Glen, Cornelius Van Vechten, Abraham N. Cuyler and others paid tuition for one English scholar each.
Bleecker's activities as a public official are well documented in several account books generated during his years of service as treasurer of the city and county of Albany and as clerk of the board of supervisors. These records document tax assessment and collection by the County of Albany in accordance to tax laws of New York State from 1781 to 1789. This includes records of the amount of taxes laid (assessed) upon each district in the county for contingent charges and the maintenance of the poor. In addition these records indicate the amount of tax revenue collected in each district of Albany County that was subsequently transmitted to the State of New York. Since practically no records of the board of supervisors have been available for the period before 1818, these volumes are of more than ordinary interest.
These papers also include personal letters of John N. Bleecker and his son, Nicholas, and daughters, Eliza, Harriet, and Margaret. Letters of interest include one dated May 18, 1814 from Harriet [Romeyn] in which she details her travel experiences in Europe with her husband In a letter March 29, 1828, Eliza (married Reverend Jacob Brodhead of Philadelphia) remarks that their son "Romeyn" is a naturalist and something of an antiquarian, and though young has already collected a museum, as he styles it – any curiosity in the coin or mineral way that you may have to dispose he will be thankful for, as we shall appropriate a small room to that purpose." Later John Romeyn Brodhead (1814-1873) became distinguished in New York State annals for his work in collecting and preparing for publication documents in Holland, Paris and London archives relating to its colonial history. Other letters contain news about the family which have genealogical value as well as information that explains the various interests in which the Bleecker and related families engaged.
