The following information is from a biographical statement created for the finding aid to the Charles Magnus Collection at the Winterthur Library.
"Charles Magnus, [1826-1900], was a print publisher, map dealer, bookseller and stationer working in New York City from 1850 to 1899 who issued over a thousand different letter sheets, maps, song sheets, envelopes, and separate prints. His best known works were city views and Civil War-related material. Much of his work was copied from other printmakers. He often altered or combined design elements from several sources, rarely crediting the original artist. Many of his works after 1865 were based on photographs, which he often altered, drawing in figures or re-drawing lines for clearer reproduction.
"Magnus was born Julian Carl Magnus in Elberfeld, Germany, and emigrated with his family to New York City between 1848 and 1850. He worked with his older brother, Carl Emil, the publisher of the German language weekly Deutsche Schnellpost, in the early 1850s, learning the printing business.
"His early work includes pictorial letter sheets illustrated with city views or newsworthy events such as railroad and ship disasters. The images were used repeatedly, with additions of new buildings, bridges, etc., drawn in to keep the picture current. During the 1850s he also printed and published lithographed maps, often incorporating city views and decorations similar to those in the letter sheets.
"During the Civil War, Magnus produced around 700 patriotic envelopes and over 300 illustrated song sheets. He used images of allegorical figures, battle scenes, political cartoons, portraits and state emblems, frequently using the same images in different combinations.
"After the War, he expanded his work to include prints, games, reward of merit cards, and advertising and custom printing. Throughout his career, he relied on similar images and techniques. He continued to use the lithographic process and hand coloring even after most printers had turned to photomechanical processes."
Lettersheets were created to comply with, yet circumvent, postal regulations that based the price charged for mailing a letter on the number of sheets of paper. The lettersheets, measuring 8.5 x 21 inches, could be folded in half, providing four pages for writing but the Post Office regarded them as one sheet of paper. Illustrations, often bird's-eye views or detailed street scenes of cities, were printed in a rectangular space at the top of the first page of the folio to increase their commercial appeal. Thus, lettersheets combined in one simple form an illustration of the place the letter writer was visiting, a "work of art" and a convenient bit of stationery. They were designed to be folded and sealed in such a way that the address could be written on the outside.
Unless otherwise noted, all the images in this collection are hand-colored and were published by Charles Magnus.
This collection consists of three series: Views of New York City and Environs; Views of Cities of New York State (excluding New York City); and United States History Themes.
The Views of New York City and Environs series, showing bird's-eye and street scenes of New York City, consists mainly of 46 lettersheets in what originally was PRI3749. The scenes date from about the 1850s to 1886; the date range is based on the few items that contain partial or full dates. The series is divided into four sub-series: images of Manhattan and environs, images of Brooklyn, images of bridges, and four German-language items that don't fit in one of the other three sub-series. Included are images of ships and elevated railroads, as well as mid-nineteenth-century views of the Crystal Palace, the Brooklyn Bridge, City Hall and the Statue of Liberty. Magnus prints of New York City that originally had been cataloged individually have been interfiled in this series.
A few of the images originally were parts of sets entitled "150 Views of New York and Environs," "100 Views of New York and Environs," "48 Views of New York and Environs," and "36 Views of New York and Environs."
The 12 hand-colored lithographs of cities in New York State that recently made up PRI3725 are mounted on black cardstock with gilt borders and, except for items 47 and 64, carry the imprint: Published by Chas. Magnus & Co., 12 Frankfort St., N.Y. Prints of views of New York City from PRI3725 were interfiled with the lettersheets series. Prints of views of New York State cities other than New York City that originally were cataloged individually have been interfiled with the images from PRI3725 to create the series "Views of Cities of New York State (excluding New York City)." These 12 images have been scanned and are available digitally.
The 16 prints that originally were cataloged individually were added to this collection to facilitate research of the Charles Magnus prints and of images of New York State cities between the 1850s and 1886 in the New York State Library.
The third series consists of three images with United States history themes, specifically, the American Revolution and the Civil War.
Also included in this finding aid is a table of maps printed by Charles Magnus that have been cataloged individually as maps in the State Library's collection.
From information in records in the card and online catalogs, it appears the original seven images in PRI3725 were removed and cataloged as individual maps or prints.
The lettersheets that are consecutively numbered from 1 to 46 as PRI3749 were purchased from Moebs and accessioned in August 1978; the source of the 12 hand-colored lithographs from steel engraved plates, originally cataloged as PRI3725, is unknown. For accession information on the 16 prints that originally were cataloged separately and added to this collection in August 2010, see the print accession book.
