Historical Note:
The 9/11 Tribute Museum was a project of the September 11th Families’ Association, a group created by the widows and family members of those killed in 9/11 with the mission “to unite and support all victims of terrorism through communication, representation, and peer support.”*
Opening its doors for the first time in 2006, the 9/11 Tribute Museum offered new perspectives to the public on the events of February 26, 1993, and September 11, 2001, by maintaining their focus on survivors. By offering educational resources for teachers and students, walking tours led by relatives of the dead, survivors, rescue and recovery workers, and with galleries of 9/11 artifacts and history, the 9/11 Tribute Museum was “more than just a museum”*; but a place for local community and victims’ families to connect and make sense of the events that would bring them together.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic which began in 2020 and increasing financial strains following a relocation, the museum was forced to close its doors to the public in August of 2022 but continues its mission online. Despite not having a physical location, the 9/11 Tribute Museum still provides educational resources and support for the 9/11 community and beyond.
The physical objects belonging to the 9/11 Tribute Museum have been transferred to the New York State Museum, and books from the Museum have been gifted to the New York State Library’s main research collection.

Scope and Content Note:
The 9/11 Tribute Museum Collection contains a wide variety of materials centered around the events of September 11th, 2001, and its impact thereafter.
The strength of this collection are the documented responses to 9/11, including; written materials such as plays and booklets dealing with personal loss and grief, memorial services and the memorial monuments created in response to those fallen, and the program materials surrounding the rebuilding of the World Trade Center Site. Other materials include 10th anniversary tributes and National Registry eligibility reports.
Of particular interest are the steel requests arranged by the September 11th Families’ Association, with each request including a letter of the intended use of steel.
