Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of timetables and travel brochures issued between 1868 and 2003, mainly by United States transportation companies. Most of the material relates to railroads but there are tables and brochures related to trolley lines, steamship companies, bus lines, and airlines.

The collection is organized by mode of transportation, starting with the railroads. Within each mode of transportation, the collection is organized alphabetically by the names of companies.

While the collection contains an extensive number of Amtrak timetables (Boxes 4 through 6), dating from 1972 to 1999, there are timetables from a variety of pre-Amtrak railroads, dating from 1868.

Most of the timetables contain detailed maps of the region(s) covered by the transportation route(s). Unless otherwise noted, each timetable contains at least one map.

In some cases, timetables also contain images of train-car interiors and exteriors, clothing of the period, and landmarks. Timetables with extensive images in one or more of the categories are indicated in the table below.
